About

Mary MonahanArtist Statement.

While creating Art Quilts, I like to work in a slow, yet spontaneous manner - allowing the confluence of color, value and shape to gradually evolve into a work that transmits vitality and expresses what is true to me. I am lucky to be able to have the time to do this in the frantically paced commodity culture we live in. In my studio there are no rules to follow except my own, and I reserve the right to ignore these, too. Creating has almost become an act of insurgency. Fabric is my medium because it’s so tactile, and because it reminds me of my mother, an artist who taught me how to sew. .

Mary recently gave up her massage therapy business in order to create more art quilts. Prior to that, she was a corporate and agency promotional copywriter. She resides in Newtown, PA with Jim, her husband of 28 years, and 21-year-old daughter, Kacy.
